Upcoming WAC events for the semester
Life on campus looks a lot different this semester due to COVID-19, but the Western Activities Council, known as WAC, isn’t letting it stop their events.
Nah’Ryan Reed-Crawford is the president of WAC and has been for 2 years now.
“COVID has definitely affected our regular planning strategies. This year we have had to limit the amount of events we put on tremendously. However, we are still maintaining a good amount from our homegrown idea events,” Reed-Crawford said.
Despite COVID-19 canceling many things, WAC is still creating a fun Fright Week in honor of fall and Halloween this month. This week is an alternative to homecoming. There are many dress up days students can participate in, as well as several events. Monday, Oct. 19 will be Griffon gear day. Tuesday is twins day, followed by Wednesday being jersey day. The school week ends on Thursday with wacky tacky day. Each day there is a different event going on throughout campus.
Araimani Wade is the chair of entertainment for WAC. She mentions that some of their original ideas had to be canceled due to COVID-19 guidelines, but there is still a process that goes into planning these events.
“We as a council, have e-board members who come together and brainstorm ideas. We present these events to our advisor and he will oversee to ensure we are following the MWSU COVID-19 guidelines,” Wade said.
Fright Week will be a great opportunity to win prizes and show school spirit, according to Darius Wherry, vice president of WAC.
“We have great events with prizes and filled with laughter and joy. Come show your Griffon Pride. #WACFrightWeek #MoWestSpiritWeek. Use those hashtags on social media for a chance to win a top prize!” Wherry said.
Any student interested in being a part of the Western Activities Council and planning events is welcome to join. In order to become an official member on the executive board, students must attend three meetings and complete an application.
“Western Activities Council is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to network and socialize. Also, it has great opportunities for a college student who wants to have a set career after college. We meet every Wednesday at 4 p.m. for fall 2020. Come on out to Blum 218/219 to see what fun things we do and how we play a big part in Missouri Western!” President Reed-Crawford said.
Vice President, Darius Wherry and Chair of Entertainment, Araimani Wade enjoy being a part of WAC.
“My favorite thing about WAC is literally what we do. Everything regarding WAC is loved. The event planning is fun and exciting. It’s like you are being trusted with the entertainment of the school. It’s a great feeling to know that you can raise the morale of your peers,” Wherry said.
“I love the fellowship of all the members and students,” Wade said. “This council is all about bringing in the school spirit to the campus.”
